TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — An Egyptian college student acquitted of explosives charges last week has been detained by immigration officials.

Youssef Megahed's attorney says the government wants to deport the former University of South Florida student even though a jury acquitted him of the federal charges.

The 23-year-old Megahed (MEG-uh-hed) was detained Monday.

Megahed and a friend were initially arrested in South Carolina in August 2007 after deputies found low-grade explosives in their car during a traffic stop. Megahed's attorney argued they were model rocket parts.

Immigration officials said they would issue a statement later Monday.

Megahed is a legal permanent resident who's lived with his family in the United States since he was 11.
