Senator calls for passage of immigration bill

Associated Press - June 18, 2007 2:24 PM ET

BOSTON (AP) - Senator Ted Kennedy warns that failing to pass immigration reforms would push illegal immigrants into isolation and create breeding grounds for home-grown terrorists.

Speaking to the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce, Kennedy said that when immigrant communities have become isolated in Europe, it often leads to terrorist acts.

The Massachusetts Democrat is a leading proponent, along with President Bush, of legislation that would grant millions of illegal immigrants lawful status, while tightening border security and creating new measures for weeding illegal workers at job sights.

The legislation remains stalled in Congress. Critics say it gives lawbreakers amnesty.
