Mexican authorities say they have arrested a drug cartel operator believed to be responsible for the killing of more than 350 people in the country.

Federal security spokesman Eduardo Sanchez said on Thursday that Mario Nunez Meza was arrested on Wednesday in the northern city of Ciudad Juarez, AFP reported.

Sanchez said Nunez, 39, is likely responsible for the murder of more than 350 people that were found in 23 secret mass graves in Durango state last year.

He also noted that Nunez is a “close collaborator” of Mexico’s most wanted man, Sinaloa cartel kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.

Nunez is also wanted for his alleged role in drug trafficking, kidnapping and money laundering.

Drug-related violence in Mexico has killed more than 70,000 people since former President Felipe Calderon launched an offensive against drug cartels in December 2006.

On July 25, Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto admitted that organized criminal gangs have gained the upper hand in some parts of the country, including the states of Michoacan, Mexico and Guerrero, despite increased military troops in those areas.
