The Trump administration is preparing to move hundreds of migrants from overcrowded camps along the U.S. border to Broward and Palm Beach counties, local officials said Thursday.


Broward Mayor Mark Bogen and Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said they were told to expect about two planeloads of migrants each week, starting in about two weeks. The 270 weekly passengers — about 1,000 each month — would be split, with half going to Palm Beach County and half to Broward.

“I asked if there was an end date to this and they said no,” Bradshaw said in a news conference Thursday afternoon.


He said the number of migrants his county wants to accommodate is “zero.” Both counties have significant homeless populations and full shelters.



“Every day we’re watching our border right here, which is the ocean," Bradshaw said. "We spend a lot of time to make sure people don’t come in to South Florida illegally.”


The news came as a surprise to local officials, who said they reached out to Florida’s two Republican senators, the Republican governor and other members of the federal delegation and were told no one had been advised by the Trump administration.


Late Thursday, Gov. Ron DeSantis still had made no public statement about the situation.


Bradshaw said the chief of the Miami border patrol office came up and told him earlier this week. Bogen said Broward Sheriff Gregory Tony also was advised by border patrol.


Sheriff Tony and the Broward Sheriff’s Office did not respond to inquiries Thursday about the possible influx.


The federal government would offer no money or help to house the people, officials said.

Bradshaw said he was told the migrants are families who came from El Paso. They do not face charges, and will be released after they’re processed by border patrol, he said. They’ll be given notices to appear at immigration hearings. It was unclear how the federal government would keep track of the people.




Bogen said nonprofits, businesses and charities would be asked to take people in.


“We’re going to try,” Bogen said.


The 270 weekly passengers will be processed at U.S. Customs and Border Protection Offices in the two counties — in Dania Beach and in Riviera Beach.


Bogen called the idea “irresponsible” and said the undocumented immigrants could become homeless in South Florida.


If so, Bogen said, "I would suggest that we bring them to the Trump hotels and ask the president to open his heart and home as well.”


The Trump administration confirmed in mid-April that it was exploring ways to send undocumented migrants to “sanctuary cities” — cities seen as flouting U.S. immigration law to protect people from deportation.


Broward and Palm Beach counties are both Democratic strongholds. Neither considers itself a sanctuary for illegal immigrants. Conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh alleged in a recent radio program that the South Florida counties have sanctuary policies protecting the undocumented.


In an April 12 Tweet, the president said, “Due to the fact that Democrats are unwilling to change our very dangerous immigration laws, we are indeed, as reported, giving strong considerations to placing Illegal Immigrants in Sanctuary Cities only....”

The Florida Legislature recently passed a bill banning sanctuary cities. All state agencies and local governments would be required to respond to detainer requests from federal immigration enforcement officials of suspected illegal immigrants in their custody. Gov. DeSantis has said he supports such a ban but has not yet signed the bill.


Sanctuary policies have been a political lightning rod throughout the country in recent years. Ten states have passed laws favoring them, and nine have adopted laws to restrict them or ban them, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.


Both Broward and Palm Beach counties stopped honoring immigration detention requests involving inmates after a 2014 court ruling. That ruling said jails would be violating inmates’ civil rights if they held them beyond their release dates without a signed judge’s order.

It’s unclear whether that policy changed under newly appointed Sheriff Tony. The sheriff’s office did not respond to two emailed inquiries about the agency’s approach.


In September, Bradshaw pledged his agency would cooperate with federal immigration agents. “We have not been, are presently not and will not be a sanctuary county as far as law enforcement is concerned as long as I am the sheriff,” Bradshaw said.


Last year, Broward County commissioners declared the county was “inclusive and welcoming” to all, “irrespective of race, religion, ethnicity or national origin.’’ But wording about Broward being a “refuge’’ was removed from the resolution because of concerns the Trump administration would deem Broward a “sanctuary county’’ for illegal immigrants and withhold federal funds.


The influx of immigrants could overwhelm a community already grappling with a growing homeless population. Broward officials said homeless shelters are full. The latest homeless census found the numbers on the incline. And this year, the number of homeless children in Broward County’s school system reached 4,479, the highest number ever, according to the county.

As border crossings surge, the U.S. government has begun moving migrants out of the border camps to be processed elsewhere. The Associated Press reported on Monday that U.S. Customs and Border Protection was taking the rare step of flying migrants to less crowded locations for processing. According to the AP, the flights are managed by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement at a cost of $6,000 each.


Busloads of migrants were moved to Denver, Colo., earlier this week, where they were welcomed by local officials. Several churches volunteered to provide shelter, according to the AP.


The U.S. military, meanwhile, is building six tent cities near the border to house migrants,NBC News reported Wednesday.

MIAMI – The Trump administration is preparing to release hundreds of asylum-seeking migrants caught along the southern border into Florida's Broward and Palm Beach counties, with no apparent plan to house, feed or care for them, according to local officials who have been briefed on the plans.
Broward County Mayor Mark Bogen said Thursday that Customs and Border Protection officials told him they would unload about 1,000 migrant families each month, evenly split between the two counties, for an unknown period of time.
Bogen called the plan "irresponsible" and warned that it would create a "homeless encampment" in his South Florida county.
"To bring hundreds of people here every week without providing the necessary resources to house and feed them is inhumane," Bogen said.

Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said Thursday that he received a similar briefing from the Customs and Border Patrol chief in Miami. He said the migrants would be mostly families currently being detained in El Paso, Texas. They would be processed at CBP facilities in Broward and Palm Beach counties, given a date to appear in immigration court and then released into the community.


Beyond that, Bradshaw said CBP offered no other details or offers of assistance.
"No accommodations for transportation leaving (the CBP facilities). No accommodations for shelter or a place to live," he said. "Just no real plan on what's going to happen to these…people."
CBP did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Officials at the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees CBP, did not respond either.


But the decision to ship migrants to Florida appears to be the latest, and most distant, effort by Border Patrol to release Central American families directly into local communities.
The agency has complained that its facilities have been overwhelmed by the record number of migrant families crossing the border. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which is responsible for interior immigration enforcement and has more detention space available, has also said it's running out of space.

That led Border Patrol agents to begin releasing migrants directly into local communities, at bus stations, community shelters, churches and other places along the border. That's been happening in Tucson since March.
It remains unclear why the Trump administration selected South Florida as the first location not along the southern border. Trump has discussed wanting to punish so-called "sanctuary cities" that do not fully comply with federal immigration laws by dumping migrants in those communities. But Bradshaw has vehemently denied that Palm Beach County is a "sanctuary" community, as have Broward officials.
Palm Beach County is also home to Trump's Mar-a-Lago club.
Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., has been in touch with local sheriffs and has reached out to the White House and the Department of Homeland Security to get more details about the plan, according to spokesman Chris Hartline.
The transfers are expected to begin within the next two weeks, leading South Florida officials to dust off their mass migration emergency plans originally designed for waves of Cuban and Haitian rafters that occasionally land on their shores. Bradshaw said he never envisioned that plan be used for this kind of situation.
"A mass migration plan is designed to handle something like the Mariel Boat Lift, where people come here…and then we take them into custody and turn them over to Border Patrol, it's not Border Patrol bringing us their overflow from another state," he said. "That's not what it was designed for."
Palm Beach County Mayor Mack Bernard said they have discussed setting up tent cities to temporarily house the migrants after they're released from CBP custody. They may also call on local health districts to screen the migrants for any communicable diseases or medical problems.
Bernard said he may even request an emergency declaration given the costs and resources that may be required to care for the migrants while protecting the welfare of his residents.
"If we have to address this as our responsibility, we will do everything in our power to feed those individuals and to provide them shelter," Bernard said. "But it will create a financial strain on our already tight budget."

The Trump administration is preparing to move hundreds of immigrants from overcrowded camps along the U.S. border to Broward and Palm Beach counties, local officials said Thursday.

Broward Mayor Mark Bogen and Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said they were told to expect two planeloads of immigrants each week, starting in about two weeks. The 270 weekly passengers — about 1,000 each month — would be split, with half going to Palm Beach County and half to Broward.

Confusion and disbelief swirled late Thursday around the reports, which were not confirmed or acknowledged by the Trump administration. Local members of Congress, Florida’s two Republican senators and even Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said they didn’t know about it.

“The governor’s office was not informed of this decision,” his spokeswoman said in an email. “Florida counties do not have the resources to accommodate an influx of illegal immigrants.”

In an afternoon news conference organized after the news broke, Sheriff Bradshaw said the Miami border patrol operations chief “came up” to talk to him about it earlier this week.

Broward Sheriff Gregory Tony, a DeSantis appointee, also said he was advised, but not by border patrol. In an email, Tony said the information, which “was also shared with me by my trusted colleague” Bradshaw, was not confirmed by state or federal officials. He said he passed it on to Bogen so Broward could be prepared, and is “currently awaiting a scheduled calendar meeting with my County Commissioners.”

The immigrants are families who crossed the border illegally into El Paso, Texas, and who indicated they were Florida-bound, Bradshaw said. They will be processed at U.S. Customs and Border Protection Offices in Dania Beach and in Riviera Beach, and released into the community, expected to return for hearings, he said.

The federal government isn’t offering to help, he said.

“No accommodations for transportation leaving there. No accommodations for shelter or a place to live. Just no real plan what is going to happen to these people,” Bradshaw said.

Housing, food, health care and schooling for the children will be up to local communities, he and Bogen said.

“I asked if there was an end date to this and they said no,” Bradshaw said in the news conference.

There was no mention of immigrants being transferred to Miami-Dade or any other Florida county.

Palm Beach County Mayor Mack Bernard said that the county would do what it could to help and would demand reimbursement from the federal government. He said a state of emergency might need to be declared.

Commissioner Melissa McKinlay said the federal government should provide funds upfront to care for the migrants. She questioned the logic of the plan.

“I have grave concerns about placing families in Florida less than three weeks prior to the start of hurricane season," Palm Beach County Commissioner Melissa McKinlay said. "This is poor planning on the part of the Trump administration.”

The inundation could overwhelm communities already grappling with a growing homeless population.

Mayor Bogen said Broward would “do everything possible to help these people,” and would call on nonprofits, businesses and charities to take people in.

U.S. Rep. Ted Deutch, D-West Boca, said he was hesitant to address reports of the immigrant transfers, because “no one in the administration seems to know what is happening.” He was among the local members of Congress who denounced the idea and asked for a briefing.

Republican U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio sent a letter Thursday to the Department of Homeland Security asking if there are plans to transfer migrants to states that don’t border Mexico, and if so, to where. He asked how the destination cities or counties were chosen and whether the department had let them know so they could prepare.

“It is clear the current situation is untenable and the Department is faced with difficult choices given the lack of resources appropriated to secure our nation’s southern border,” he wrote.

But according to the article, these were headed to Florida, because that's where they want to be and end up. There's a TON of Central Americans already in Fl. spread throughout the state. Many of them have families in Fl. and when they get to them, THE SCAM is completed. They're IN for NO GOOD REASON except they showed up on the border with a canned story some LEFTIST FILTH IMMIGRATION ATTORNEY told them to repeat, OR, there were just too many of the invaders hanging around at the time and the CBP had to get rid of them so they flew them off to FL.

Yes, I know, that's why these people want to go Florida which is why they're being sent there. Let these areas in Florida pay for them, why should Texas, Arizona or New Mexico pay for them?

Florida has 27 members of Congress, 14 are Republican and 13 are Democrat. Yet Florida has a Republican Governor and 2 Republican Senators. Republicans need to flip many of these Democrat Congressional districts to Republican to support our positions on illegal immigration. When they see these planes full of con artists unloading into their communities with no federal aid and see their own jobs at risk because they'll all have work permits issued under existing US law, maybe they'll stand up for their own lives, families and fellow citizens, demand an end to this nonsense and vote Republicans into office in 2020 who will end it in 2021.

I don't think people in our cause understood the importance of the 2018 Midterms. They understood the invasion but they didn't understand that without Republican control of both chambers of the US Congress, there would be absolutely nothing we can legally do to stop it. because we don't have the votes to change the laws to allow usu to do so.

I approve of sending them to Democrat stongholds so the Democrat Americans who live there can suffer the consequences so they'll understand why this nonsense has to be stopped in its tracks by the US Congress. They can either force their Democrat Representatives to support Republican actions to fix this disaster, vote for Republicans in 2020 who will vote to fix it or live with it. I'd prefer they not be sent anywhere. I say keep them in detention close to the border until they are given asylum or deported. These are not refugees and the majority of them have entered our country illegally. We should not be giving them exactly what they want, nor should we be delivering them exactly where they want to go. Trump talks a lot but nothing ever seems to come from it. What happened to those huge tent city detention centers he promised us along the border?

I'm beginning to believe Trump actually wants to continue this problem because he thinks it will strengthen his chances for reelection in 2020. Trump may attempt to dab a little medicine on the wound occasionally for appearance sake but that doesn't do much good when you keep ripping the scab off every couple days and rubbing dirt in it.

He's done that with the Remain in Mexico policy. It went to the courts and just a few days ago, Barr and Justice Department won it for him through the 9th Circuit, to remain in Mexico. Will it be appealed on to the US Supreme Court? I don't know. But for now, no asylum seeker therefore can enter the US under that policy to claim asylum. Yet Border Patrol lets them in anyway, because there is no way to keep them out, because they can't shoot them. So the procedure is let them in because they can't keep them out because we don't have enough barriers and can't shoot them, then process them, then haul them back out. That one case took over a year and it's probably not over yet if the losers appeal to the Supreme Court. And now they've got to figure out how to physically keep them out without shooting them and round up all the ones that are already here and haul them out.
