Specter Addresses Illegal Immigration Concerns

U.S. Senator Arlen Specter was in our area Monday talking about his efforts to help get federal dollars for local projects but the senator's visit to Hazleton took an unexpected turn.

The tables were turned, when some in the Mountain City wanted to ask their senator about another hot button issue: illegal immigration.

Specter was in Hazleton to talk about a project that involves a bus terminal, offices and a parking garage. But some of those gathered wanted to talk about illegal immigration.

"I know you're not here for us but this bill is coming up this week. We want more answers. We're citizens here and we pay taxes too," said one constituent.

One estimate has 12 million illegal immigrants living in the United States. Congress has floated a bill to deal with it although it calls for fining the illegals. Some call that amnesty for breaking the law in the first place.

"They give you the same old gibberish. They say we're trying to do something you don't understand. We do understand. We are the ones who speak English. We are the ones who read English. We do understand what they want to do," said Arleen Thomas of White Haven.

Senator Specter said there is a need to secure the border. He also admitted the government is not enforcing a federal law which punishes businesses who knowingly hire illegal immigrants.

"If we can't find an answer that's better than the current system we're not going to pass a bill and then it's going to be, it's really chaos today. It's anarchy the way the system is being run," Specter said.

As the senator left for Washington to deal with the immigration bill he takes with him some of the feelings of the people he represents.

This senator needs to retire along with McCain, Kennedy, Bush, Kye, Lott. this is a bunch of old men who have lost their common sense and are only working for their self interest instead of the voters.

Yes, it is so obvious we need term limits on these people.

Add Senator Lugar to that list that needs to go back home.
