Immigration law may have cut school attendance

Immigration law may have cut school attendance

    August 2, 2010 3:48 pm

At least one school official suspects the state's immigration law is contributing to reduced enrollment in Phoenix-area classrooms.

The expected number of students at two districts this year is down by more than 600, based on projections made at the end of last school year, according to The Arizona Republic.

Phoenix Balsz Elementary School District took the biggest hit, with 560 fewer students than expected. The southeast Phoenix district had 2,809 students enrolled on the first day of school, but only 2,250 showed up.

Four schools in the Chandler Unified School District are down by a total of about 100 students, although the district overall has 700 more students than at the end of the last school year.

Terry Locke, spokesman for CUSD, said the early enrollment growth is expected to reach the 750 new students predicted this year.

Balsz district Superintendent Jeff Smith can't say for sure that enrollment is down because of the law targeting illegal immigrants, but he suspects it is.

A federal judge blocked the most controversial parts of the law before it went into effect last week. Under the ruling, local and state law enforcement officers are not required to check the immigration status of people they reasonably suspect of being illegal immigrants.

NOTHING bad and EVERYTHING good will come from enforcing immigration laws...

The ONLY people hurt by illegals leaving are the ones who exploit them...

APS Prepares For Influx Of Arizona Students

Brooks Says District Will Educate All Kids

Comments (40)Arizona's new immigration law has the attention of Albuquerque Public Schools leaders.

Superintendent Winston Brooks said he won't know how many students will move here from Arizona until after the school year starts, but APS is getting ready.

"If they come to our door and say, 'We want to be educated', or come to our door and say, 'We want our kids to be educated', then that's exactly what we are going to do. We are going to educate all kids," said Brooks.

Brooks said the district does not ask students about their immigration status.

"We're not going to discriminate on anything," said Brooks.

He said he expects a surge of families moving to Albuquerque from Arizona, and he has heard some are already moving here to avoid the new immigration law.

"I am beginning to hear from land owners, apartment managers that their apartments are absolutely full," said Brooks.

But not everyone agrees that APS should be so welcoming.

"I think they should question it just because, one, they just cut so many teachers this year, that they are going to have too many students in a classroom," said Carys Drennan.

Brooks said the district should know after the first two weeks of school how many families have moved here from Arizona, but not necessarily their immigration status.

One of the comments on the KOATtv link:

"I ABSOLUTELY believe we should make a stand against this tyranny that is being imposed on us and have "White walk out day." or "Anglo American walk out day" or my favorite "TIRED OF WORKING FOR OTHER PEOPLE WHO DON'T CARE ABOUT OUR LAWS, OR US AND ARE BLOODSUCKING PARASITES WALK OUT DAY"
Good luck mowing the lawn now."

This slimeball "Winston Brooks" is positively salivating at the prospect of receiving, what, about $10,000/head to educate the children of illegal aliens. What a bonanza for the school district, and what a horror for the taxpayers!

It's not just the cost of educating illegal kids and anchor babies, it's the degradation of education for our own American children. The only exodus from our local schools here in IL is American kids being enrolled in private schools where they can actually learn something.

We all know schools are just babysitters for illegals.

Look at LAUSD. 50 percent drop out rate for the anchor babies.
