Lexington KY:Group rallies for immigration enforcement

Group rallies for Lexington immigration enforcement
    By Danielle Trusso

Kentuckians for Immigration Reform and Enforcement rallied Saturday in downtown Lexington for the adoption federal immigration enforcement training for local law enforcement.

The training is part of the 1996 Immigration and Naturalization Act known as 287(g).

Lexington Police Chief Anthany Beatty and the Mayoral Commission on Immigration have expressed little desire for the training.

Pro-immigrant groups such as the Kentucky Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights spoke out against the law one of the commission's public hearings, saying it could encourage racial profiling.

Doug Roy, one of K-FIRE's organizers, said 287(g) could not be used for racial profiling if it's used only to do background checks of arrested individuals.

This is the same idea supported by commission member and Fayette Commonwealth Attorney Ray Larson.

I hope they had a large turn-out. The organizer was really pushing hard to get the word out.

Lexington police chief leaving police force for UK

Perhaps the new police chief will support 287(g) ? We can hope.

LEXINGTON, Ky. --Lexington's police chief has resigned and will become assistant vice president for public safety for the University of Kentucky.

Anthany Beatty, who joined the department in 1973 and became chief in 2001, will assume his new post in January, the university said Friday.

"We are delighted that someone with the background, skills and leadership of Anthany Beatty is joining the University of Kentucky," UK President Lee Todd said in a statement.

Beatty will oversee the UK Police Department, the departments of parking and transportation, and Environmental Health and Safety and Emergency Management.

Lexington Mayor Jim Newberry said the city is sorry to lose Beatty but that he is glad the chief is moving to UK.

"Over the past three decades he has made Lexington a safer place to live, and that is a significant accomplishment," Newberry said in a statement. "But today's announcement is in many ways a win-win for UK and for Lexington."

Beatty will replace Ken Clevidence, who retired from UK in June after more than 20 years.

Newberry had said he wanted Beatty to become the city's public safety commissioner, but Beatty's son, Embry, is a Lexington firefighter, and the city's nepotism policy prohibited his appointment. Newberry eventually appointed Tim Bennett, who was the interim commissioner.
