Have you read the law?

Arizona's new immigration law continues to hold the national news spotlight.

University of Arizona law professor James Anaya came under sharp questioning last night from Fox's Greta Van Susteren:

In response to a question, Anaya told Van Susteren he has actually read the law. Some critics, including Attorney General Eric Holder and Homeland Security director Janet Napolitano, have conceded in recent days that they haven't read the law.

(The Star's Brady McCombs provided a detailed breakdown of the law on May 2, and we recommend it to politicians, official spokesmen and others who wish to talk about the law. You can also read the actual law.)

Another federal official sent out to discuss the Arizona law yesterday admitted that he hadn't read it, either.

State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley - defending a U.S. diplomat who expressed regret to China last week about Arizona's immigration law - admitted he hadn't read the law. Nonetheless, he said the law could "devolve into racial profiling" and present "a fundamental challenge to human rights around the world."

Reader comments on this site over the past week have been harshly critical of public officials for criticizing the law without reading it.
