The debate over Democratic Governor Eliot Spitzer's decision to allow illegal immigrants to obtain driver's licenses continues.
Today in Niagara Falls, he says when most people understand his plan, they support it.
"We're going to require that people have a valid foreign passport in order to get a license, the same document that they can get into the country with through any airport any day of the week," says Spitzer. "And we're going to say if you have that document - and we will verify it - and make sure that we know who you are, then we'll give you a driver's license. That's an awful lot better than the situation now."
He says illegal immigrants buy forged social security cards to obtain driver's licenses, and his plan would offer the state the chance to see real documents when deciding whether to give a person a license.
"We will have the most secure, most effective driver's license security system in the nation when we're done doing what we're doing," he says.
Still, even some of Spitzer's fellow Democrats are fighting this plan, including Erie County Clerk Kathy Hochul, who was appointed to her position by Spitzer.
Some Erie County legislators are working on a resolution to keep from enacting Spitzer's plan, but they cannot agree on how to word it.
Spitzer's plan would be introduced in stages, beginning in December.
