Fugitive Still on the Loose After Brazen Escape in Latham

April 19, 2007 10:04 AM PDT

Local authorities are looking for a fugitive who is still on the loose today.

An illegal immigrant facing deportation kicked out a window from the jail van he was in yesterday, and escaped.

Colonie Police say 38-year-old Carlos Herrera was picked up from the Schenectady County Jail by U.S. Immigration officers who were taking him to the Bank of America in Latham, where he was supposed to be meeting with family members. Police say Herrera sprinted from the parking lot at about 2:30pm, then flagged down a driver along Latham Circle for a ride.

"It was just a citizen that happened to be traveling west, (who) was flagged down by the individual that we were looking for, and provided that individual with a ride," says Colonie Police Detective Sergeant Kenneth Fuchs.

Police say the driver had no idea he was giving a ride to a fugitive, as Herrera was dressed casually and acted normal.
