LUKEVILLE, Ariz. -- The Lukeville border crossing on the way to Rocky Point has re-opened after gunfire erupted on the Mexican side.

Border Patrol agents have one person in custody who was trying to cross into Arizona and they are searching for more people.

Mexican authorities told agents there was an altercation between a group of people that was trying to cross the border outside of the port of entry, according to Customs and Border Protection Enforcement officials.

Out of caution for the traveling public, Border Patrol agents shut down the port from 4 to 6 p.m. while they searched the area for people who crossed outside the port of entry.

The Lukeville border crossing along the road to Rocky Point is back open after a search for gunmen forced its closure Monday afternoon..

Customs officials say they closed the port of entry about 4 p.m. after violence and gunfire erupted nearby in Mexico. Border Patrol officers searched for suspects in the desert wilderness along the border.

Authorities say they took at least one person into custody who was trying to enter the United States. They allowed cars to resume crossing the border shortly after 6 p.m. when the search for suspects moved away from Lukeville. Customs and Border Protection officials say there is no traffic backup and no immediate danger for travelers.
