A federal judge has set a trial date in a challenge to an eastern Nebraska City's ordinance that would bar landlords from renting to illegal immigrants or businesses from hiring them.

Voters in Fremont approved the ordinance in June and it was supposed to take effect in July.

But the American Civil Liberties Union of Nebraska and the Mexican American Legal Defense & Educational Fund sued to get it thrown out, contending that the ordinance is discriminatory and contrary to state law.

The City Council suspended the ordinance until the courts decide its legality.

U.S. Magistrate Judge F.A. Gossett on Tuesday scheduled the non-jury trial for March 15 in Omaha.
