FRANKFORT, Ky.

An immigration bill that will require all government contractors to verify the citizenship of workers has passed the House today.

Democratic state Rep. Mike Cherry of Princeton said the purpose of the legislation is to preserve jobs for Kentuckians.

The House voted 90-6 on Tuesday to approve the measure, which was similar to legislation passed by the House in each of the past two years.

Both of the previous bills died in the Senate, casting serious doubt on the chances for passage of this latest version.

The Senate is now considering a separate immigration bill that will allow local and state police agencies to check the citizenship status of people they stop and detain them if warranted.

The Senate bill drew demonstrators who believe it is unfair and unnecessary to the Capitol on Tuesday.
