Calif island lands in storm of immigration debate

An island off the Los Angeles coast reluctantly finds itself in the middle of an international tussle over illegal immigration.

And some leaders are blaming their own congressman for putting them there.

Rep. Dana Rohrabacher earlier this month confronted a Mexican official who was distributing identity cards that nationals use in the U.S. to cash checks. The GOP congressman said the IDs only help illegal immigrants get a foothold in the U.S.

Many island residents saw his visit as grandstanding, portraying their community as a haven for illegal immigrants and unnecessarily drawing them into a raging immigration debate that could harm their tourist-dependent economy.

They say they've received e-mails with people threatening to take their business elsewhere.

If any place needs to be boycotted because of illegal immigration, it should be Catalina Island. Those hotel managers have created a drug dealer gang haven on that island by hiring illegals to work in their hotels, who in turn have brought their anchor brats over there, who in turn have done what they all do all over California....create GANG BLIGHT!!

The hotel/restaurant industry over there should be FORCED into using e-Verify to hire anyone on that island and ICE needs to raid that place and clean house!! THERE IS A GANG PROBLEM ON CATALINA ISLAND that the locals there are trying to keep it quiet, because they don't want it to ruin their business...notice this story didn't have the decency to name which "California Island" they were talking about?

...and WHO is one of the LARGEST INVESTORS in the hotel/restaurant industry????

AAHOA meets Nancy Pelosi and top Democrats
July 4, 2008

AAHOA and NABHOOD met with Top Democratic Leaders.

AAHOA leaders traveled to Washington, D.C. to meet face-to-face with leading Democratic members of Congress at an exclusive Capitol Hill Reception.

Many important Congresspersons were in attendance, including Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD), Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-NY), Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA), Rep. John Conyers (D-MI), Rep. Joe Crowley (D-NY), Rep. Al Green (D-TX), and Rep. Donna Christensen (D-VI).

Ambassador of the Bahamas Cornelius Smith was also present.

AAHOA co-hosted the event with the National Association of Black Hotel Owners, Operators, and Developers (NABHOOD).

About 65 people total attended, including representatives from AH&LA.
