    Florida AG Unveils Anti-Immigrant Measure

    Florida AG Unveils Anti-Immigrant Measure

Florida Attorney General and Republican gubernatorial hopeful Bill McCollum has proposed a new anti-immigrant measure that could be even harsher than the notorious Arizona law that was partially stricken down last month. McCollum’s bill would impose a twenty-day jail sentence for any immigrant who doesn’t carry documentation, as well as longer sentences for crimes committed by undocumented immigrants. On Wednesday, McCollum said his bill "goes one step further" than Arizona’s and predicted that Arizona will want to pass a similar measure.

Bill McCollum: "This is our own law, not theirs. And I think when we’re done passing this law, Arizona is going to want our law. They’re going to want to pass our law, because we’re better, we’re stronger, we’re tougher, and we’re fairer."

Nice to see that Florida is trying to top Arizona on who is tougher. Maybe it's all catching on. The reason for all these states now pushing for their own legislation is that they don't want to be the proud recipients of the endless flow of illegal aliens from states like Arizona who have passed tough measures. When the rubber meets the road, NO state no matter how soft they appear on illegal immigration, wants to suffer the economic consequences of a soaring illegal alien entitlement population.

If other states had any intention of filing similar laws I wish they would do it immediately. It is harder for the Federal Government to fight 20 states that it is to fight with one or two.

Florida Attorney General Proposes Strict Immigration Laws
August 17, 2010 by Personal Liberty News Desk

Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum has unveiled a historically aggressive immigration bill proposal that he said would go "one step further" than Arizona’s controversial new law, which was recently stripped of its key provisions by a Federal judge.

Similar to Arizona’s legislation, McCollum’s proposal would require law enforcement personnel to verify the immigration status of individuals who they "reasonably suspect" of being an illegal immigrant. Furthermore, the bill would mandate that legal resident aliens carry their immigration documentation at all times or face up to 20 days in jail.

However, the legislation would go beyond Arizona’s measure by requiring businesses to utilize a national database to verify a person’s immigration status before hiring them. It would also allow judges to impose stiffer penalties on illegal immigrants who break the law.

"This legislation will provide new enforcement tools for protecting our citizens and will help our state fight the ongoing problems created by illegal immigration," said McCollum. "Florida will not be a sanctuary state for illegal aliens."

McCollum—a Republican who is in the midst of a heated primary election race for governor—was heavily criticized for unveiling his plan two weeks prior to the election, according to The Miami Herald.

"It’s clear the only way to get McCollum to take any action on anything is when he’s down in the polls," said Rick Scott, his opponent in the upcoming primary race.
