COSTA MESA - About 100 people turned out Sunday evening at Fairview Park for a Western-themed fundraiser to support the re-election of Mayor Allan Mansoor to the City Council.

The $25-a-head "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone," fundraiser and potluck was hosted by the Gilchrist Angels, a group of pro-legal immigration women.

Mansoor put Costa Mesa in the national spotlight in December when the City Council voted 3-2 to pursue an agreement with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to train its police officers to enforce immigration law. Mansoor has argued the policy will make the city safer for all.

Two of the city's five council seats are up for grabs in the Nov. 7 election. With Councilman Gary Monahan termed out of office in November and Mansoor up for re-election, the election results could have implications for the future of Costa Mesa.

"We think (Mansoor's) one of the last remaining cowboys out there," said Sandra Sweet of Mission Viejo, who attended the event. "He's one of the few men who holds to his conviction and stands up for the law."

A political action committee has formed to combat the city's position on illegal immigration. The PAC is backing planning commissioner Bruce Garlich and former councilman Mike Scheafer in their council bids.

Five protesters stood behind yellow caution tape waving signs that read "Racists go home" and "We are a people without borders."

Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, R-Huntington Beach, announced his endorsement of parks commissioner Wendy Leece, who supports the city's immigration policy. Rohrabacher reaffirmed his endorsement of Mansoor.

"The people of Costa Mesa are an example to other cities," Rohrabacher said. "This election will have a tremendous national impact." \
