U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson, R-S.C., is planning a visit to the area next week to discuss the illegal immigration problem and get feedback from residents.

His trip to the area, which will feature a stop in Hardeeville, along with trips to West Columbia and Barnwell, is part of House Republican efforts to sell voters on the merits of the immigration reform bill the House passed in December, Wilson spokeswoman Kim Olive said.

The bill, which emphasizes enforcement and border security, is drastically different than a version the Senate approved earlier this year.

The Hardeeville meeting will take place Aug. 11 at 6 p.m. at the Palmetto Electric Cooperative's New River office off U.S. 278.

"Congressman Wilson is going to be there to hear their concerns, take their questions, share ideas in an open forum," Olive said.

Wilson has said he supports efforts to toughen enforcement on gang activity of illegal immigrants, increase cooperation between border sheriffs and law enforcement, and put pressure on employers to stop hiring illegal workers.
