SULLIVAN CITY - A Sullivan City police officer is nursing a banged up hand and wrist following a dangerous pursuit with a suspected smuggler. Police said the man used his vehicle to repeatedly ram the patrol unit.

Sullivan City spokesperson Joe Cantu said the routine traffic stop quickly turned into a pursuit and that pursuit turned into a game of chicken between officers and the alleged drug smuggler.

"During the pursuit he tried to ram our vehicle, trying to get the officers to get involved in an accident and off his back." Joe Cantu said.

Cantu says the 21-year-old man from Camargo, Mexico, used this truck as a deadly weapon. The suspected smuggler rammed this patrol unit until both vehicles couldn't drive away.

The suspected smuggler realized his truck wouldn't drive off, Cantu says he fled on foot. Officers managed to catchup to the man and arrest him

The officer who was involved in the accident walked away without any real injuries; only a sore wrist and hand.

32 bundles of marijuana, worth a quarter of a million dollars on the street, were siezed at the scene.

Cantu tells CHANNEL 5 NEWS this illustrates the desperation each smuggler faces.
