SAN DIEGO (KFMB/CNN) - Contractors are already submitting bids for the first step of President Donald Trump's signature promise - a border wall with Mexico.

But some of those interested in the job are feeling the heat from protesters.

In San Diego on Wednesday people gathered to ask a company to withdraw its bid for a government contract to build the nearly 2,000-mile long wall. The group spent hours calling on R.E. STAITE Engineering Inc. to withdraw its proposal.

While the company refused to comment publicly, it did acknowledge the group on Wednesday, saying protesters have their rights.

This first round of bids is only to design and build wall prototypes in the San Diego border area. The deadline to get them to the Department of Homeland Security is April 4.

DHS is also accepting bids for a border fence, although Trump has continually said he wants to build a wall, not a fence.
