Paul Corden, Bob Inglis spar over Social Security, immigration
By Dan Hoover • STAFF WRITER • October 20, 2008

Fourth District Democratic challenger Paul Corden and Republican U.S. Rep. Bob Inglis differed respectfully, but sharply on fixes for Social Security and Medicare-Medicaid during their second televised debate Monday night.

Asked about controlling illegal immigration, both men said they oppose any form of amnesty, but differed in their approaches to regulation.

Inglis said he would tighten border controls, require employers to use the E-Verify system, limit government benefits to U.S. citizens and establish a years-long pathway to legal status through fines, temporary work time, fluency in English, return to aliens’ home countries and application for legal re-entry.

Corden said the main challenge is getting control of the nation’s borders, but further regulation must begin with employers and effective enforcement of existing laws.
