Sen. Lindsey Graham called on Congress, and specifically Democrats, to pass immigration reform legislation that would increase border security and stop future wave of illegal crossings like those happening now on the southern border.
“Showing the American people we will take a tough line on future waves of illegal immigration helps build the necessary political support to deal fairly with the problems created in the past,” the South Carolina Republican said in a series of tweets Monday.
Graham’s social media commentary came in response to the wave of illegal immigrants rushing the U.S. border at San Ysidro, Calif.
The immigrants, part of a caravan from Central America, have thrown rocks at U.S. border agents, who responded with rubber bullets and tear gas.
Congress has about two weeks to pass a 2019 spending bill that would include at least $1.6 billion in wall funding. President Trump and some congressional Republicans want at least $5 billion.
It’s not clear yet how the border clashes will impact the negotiations.
Graham said in his tweet series that those who back “dealing fairly” with people now living here illegally “should make it clear the lawless behavior occurring at the southern border crossing will not be tolerated.”
Graham, who is set to become Senate Judiciary Committee chairman next year, said Democrats “can also offer their strong support for additional efforts to secure our border today and in the future.”
