Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio brought about 100 posse volunteers and deputies to Mesa on Monday, about three weeks after a two-day crime sweep that netted scores of arrests.

The Sheriff’s Office notified Mesa police when they started their enforcement about 2 p.m., Mesa Assistant Chief John Meza said. He added that Mesa police offered to provide assistance if needed.

MCSO told Mesa police that the sweep would be conducted citywide and would last for several hours.

MESA, Ariz. (AP) - Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio on Monday launched another crackdown on immigration and other criminal violators in Mesa.

The effort comes more than two weeks after the sheriff's office conducted a similar sweep in Mesa.

Arpaio had been upset that word of his late June crackdown in Mesa had been leaked to news reporters. The latest sweep was unannounced.

The sheriff has drawn criticism for crackdowns in three heavily Hispanic areas of metropolitan Phoenix during late March and early April.

While critics say the sweeps were fraught with racial profiling, Arpaio says the patrols were intended to suppress crime and that his deputies didn't racially profile Hispanics.

Mesa Police Chief George Gascón told the Republic that an unannounced sweep could hurt Mesa police officers' ability to deal with demonstrators and keep the peace.

Well Chief Gascon, you wont have to worry about demonstrators much longer. Once Sheriff Joe catches all the illegals and deports them, there wont be anyone left to demonstrate.
