COSTA MESA – A boy struck while playing soccer by an unlicensed and undocumented driver will need several surgeries to regain the use of his right leg, police said Sunday.

The 7-year-old Costa Mesa boy was in an alley when police received a call at 5:54 p.m. Saturday from a home in the 1000 block of Valencia reporting that an accident had occurred, police Sgt. Joyce La Pointe said.

La Pointe said the unlicensed driver, identified as Mauricio Rivera-Ibanez, 22, was reported to be speeding when he hit the boy and a garage in the alley.

"It took the officers a couple of minutes to find the injured boy," La Pointe said. "He was transported to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana with serious damage to his right calf. He will have to undergo several surgeries to repair his leg."

Rivera-Ibanez was arrested on suspicion of being an unlicensed driver. He is being held at Orange County Jail on an immigration hold.

if it was an american the family of the boy could sue ... but because he's an illegal immgrant with no drivers license and proably no auto insruance , they will get JACK SQUAT ...

they could try to sue him , but as far as i know mexico doesn't have any sort of system that would allow the family to garnish his wages ... he will just sit in jail for maybe what , a month ? then walk across the border scott free ..

The sad part is theyhave to commit a crime to be deported when common sense says get rid of them before the crime is committed.Or better yet seal the da## border and not even let them in.
