Illegal immigration is a hot topic, but there is a different side to the debate.

There's a special group of Mexican Immigration Officers who work with border crossers, and they're helping them understand the perils of trying to cross into the United States.

"Grupo Beta" patrols the border, but they are not there to enforce any laws or keep people from crossing.

Instead they advise immigrants of the treacherous trip ahead and make sure they are prepared. They check that crossers are in good shape and have enough water to survive the hot desert temperatures.
They warn them to stay away from coyotes, to wear light clothing, and not bring anything of value like jewelry since many immigrants are robbed.

They also record the names of the people they talk to in case they have to identify their bodies if they don't make it across alive.
While delivering their tips and warnings they also talk to crossers about the options for a good life in Mexico.

The group has been paroling the border for the past year, but more "Grupo Beta" officers will be placed on the border as a response to the national guard being placed along the U.S. border.
