Fargo:Judge asks about paychecks in (IA)workers' case
Judge asks about paychecks in workers' case
Dec 07, 2008 - 04:05:30 CST
FARGO (AP) - A judge says she wants more information before deciding whether some of the men accused in an illegal immigration case should pay for their defense.
Twenty-three construction workers from India have been charged in federal court with making false claims of citizenship and using counterfeit Social Security cards. Fourteen of the defendants were assigned public defenders.
Prosecutors say the 14 men should have to pay for all or part of their legal expenses. The government says final paychecks for the 23 workers totaled $69,000, and say some of the men have other assets.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Karen Klein has not yet ruled on the motion. She says she first wants to know if the checks have been cashed or whether they are in the custody of authorities.
Trial in the case is set for Jan. 12.

69,000 / 23 = 3000.00 each..wonder what kind of weekly paycheck that is..bi-weekly..monthly..hmm..it is too much to be weekly or even bi-weekly..unless taxes aren't even taken out. Makes me wonder.
