    U.S. Border Patrol Weekly Blotter: November 20 – November 26

    (11/26/2008)Border Patrol agents seized over 18,346 pounds of marijuana valued at $14,679,608. Agents arrested 7 criminal aliens and 6 gang members. There were 13 rocking incidents.

    *This overview is compiled from incidents reported to the Office of Border Patrol and is not intended to reflect all Border Patrol enforcement actions. Most arrests and seizures fail to meet the requirements for mandatory reporting to the Office of Border Patrol.

    Del Rio Sector – Border Patrol agents seized 330 pounds of marijuana valued at $264,000 and arrested a national of Mexico near Comstock, Texas. Agents observed a boat cross the international boundary line on Amistad Lake, then observed a subject on the boat unload bundles of suspected contraband into a waiting truck. The driver of the truck, a legally-employed local county employee, was arrested and the truck, a county-owned vehicle, was returned to county officials.

    Laredo Sector – Border Patrol agents seized 2,037 pounds of marijuana valued at $1,630,080, a Volvo tractor-trailer, and arrested a national of Cuba at the Interstate Highway 35 traffic checkpoint near

    Laredo, Texas. The subject presented himself and the tractor-trailer for inspection and a Border Patrol canine alerted to the trailer. Further inspection of the trailer revealed a false compartment which contained the marijuana bundles.

    Tucson Sector – Border Patrol agents seized 1,582 pounds of marijuana valued at $1,266,000 and a 2002 GMC Sierra near Gu Vo, Arizona. Agents responded to a report of a possible narcotics load near Federal Route 1. Agents located and followed vehicle tracks through the brush, and encountered the abandoned vehicle covered with a tarp. The marijuana was found inside the vehicle.

    Tucson Sector – Border Patrol agents discovered a tunnel in Nogales, Arizona. Agents were conducting a search of the Grand Avenue drainage system to locate an exit point for another tunnel which was discovered earlier in the month, when an additional man-made tunnel was discovered inside a corrugated tube directly connected to the Grand Avenue drainage tunnel. The man-made tunnel is approximately 2 feet tall by 2 feet wide and begins about 1,174 feet north of the international boundary.

    El Paso Sector – Border Patrol agents arrested an illegal alien from Mexico near El Paso, Texas. During processing, the subject admitted to being a member of the Paisa gang. Records checks revealed the subject was previously deported from the United States and was previously arrested for possession with intent to distribute marijuana in Texas.

    Tucson Sector – Border Patrol agents seized 1,561 pounds of marijuana valued at $1,249,296 and a 2003 GMC Sierra near Ajo, Arizona. Agents responded to a report of a possible suspicious vehicle hidden in the brush near Federal Route 1. An agent observed the vehicle traveling westbound along a dirt road until it became stuck in the sand. The driver absconded on foot, and the marijuana was found inside the vehicle.

    Tucson Sector – Border Patrol agents seized 1,722 pounds of marijuana valued at $1,377,688 and a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado near Newfield, Arizona. Agents detected tire tracks leading from the international border, and encountered a vehicle with two occupants in the area. Upon seeing the agents, the subjects abandoned the vehicle and fled. Eighty bundles of marijuana were discovered inside the vehicle.

    Tucson Sector - Border Patrol agents served a warrant on a local residence in Rio Rico, Arizona, resulting in the arrest of 32 illegal aliens and the seizure of a 1996 Mercury Villager, a 1996 Plymouth Voyager, and a 1999 Oldsmobile Alero.

    Tucson Sector – Border Patrol agents seized 373 pounds of marijuana valued at $298,400, a 1994 Chevrolet pick-up truck, a Smith and Wesson .357 handgun, and a Mossberg 20 gauge shotgun near Three Points, Arizona. An agent observed the pick-up truck traveling on a road that is inaccessible to through-traffic in the area, and while the agent was following the vehicle, the driver drove the truck into a ditch and absconded. The driver was not found, and the marijuana and weapons were found inside the truck.

    Laredo Sector – Border Patrol agents seized 1,331 pounds of marijuana valued at $1,064,960, a 2001 Freightliner tractor-trailer and arrested a United States Citizen (USC) at the Interstate Highway 35 traffic checkpoint near Laredo, Texas. The subject presented himself and the tractor-trailer for inspection and a Border Patrol canine alerted to the trailer. Further inspection of the trailer revealed the marijuana in the cargo area.

    Tucson Sector – Border Patrol agents seized 1,070 pounds of marijuana valued at $856,336 and a 2001 Ford F250 near Willcox, Arizona. An agent attempted to perform a vehicle stop on the F-250 but its driver failed to yield and sped away. Shortly thereafter, the agent found that the vehicle had been driven through a fence and into the brush. The driver of the vehicle absconded on foot and was not found, and the marijuana was found inside the vehicle.

    Yuma Sector – Border Patrol agents seized 1,004 pounds of marijuana valued at $802,912 and a stolen 2006 Chevrolet pick-up truck near Dateland, Arizona. Agents detected tire tracks leading from the international border, and encountered the truck stuck in a dry creek bed. The marijuana was discovered inside the vehicle. Agents were able to track and arrest the driver of the vehicle, an illegal alien from Mexico.

    Marfa Sector – Border Patrol agents arrested a USC and seized a 1995 Ford Taurus near Sierra Blanca, Texas. Agents at the Interstate 10 traffic checkpoint observed a vehicle being driven erratically west of their location. As agents approached the vehicle, they noticed that a Border Patrol agent from a nearby station was also attempting to perform a vehicle stop on the same vehicle. The subject failed to yield to the agents, sped away at a high rate of speed, circumvented the checkpoint, and continued east along Interstate 10. The subject then exited Interstate 10 and drove west along its service road. The subject lost control of his vehicle and drove onto a nearby set of railroad tracks. The subject absconded on foot into the desert, but agents were able to find and arrest him. The USC admitted that he was attempting to pick up three illegal aliens who were smuggling cocaine. Records checks revealed that the subject had an active arrest warrant for burglary, drug possession, and identity theft issued in Frankfort, Kentucky.

    Rio Grande Valley Sector – Border Patrol agents seized 1,575 pounds of marijuana valued at $1,260,480 and a 1990 Chevrolet Suburban near Brownsville, Texas. Agents observed a vehicle loaded with what appeared to be numerous bundles of suspected contraband drive north from the Rio Grande River. Agents attempted to conduct a vehicle stop, and the driver abandoned the vehicle and fled back into Mexico. Agents discovered the bundles in the vehicle contained marijuana.

    Tucson Sector – Border Patrol agents seized 1,745 pounds of marijuana valued at $1,395,680 and a 1987 Ford F-250 near Queens Well, Arizona. Agents observed the vehicle leaving the border area and attempted to approach the vehicle. The driver then proceeded down a dirt road, abandoned the vehicle and absconded. Agents discovered the marijuana inside the vehicle.

    Yuma Sector - Border Patrol agents arrested an illegal alien from Honduras after he assaulted an agent near Yuma, AZ. An agent was attempting to arrest the subject who became combative and a struggle ensued. The subject was subdued and arrested. During processing, the subject admitted to being a member of the Sureno 13 gang.

    El Centro Sector – Border Patrol agents arrested an illegal alien from Mexico west of Calexico, California. Records checks revealed the subject was previously removed from the United States and was a convicted sex offender in California.

    Tucson Sector – Border Patrol agents arrested 13 illegal aliens and seized a 2001 Ford delivery van near Three Points, Arizona. The van was adorned with phony "Budweiser" markings and had fictitious Arizona license plates. Agents performed a vehicle stop on the van and discovered eight illegal aliens from China and five illegal aliens from Mexico inside.

    Tucson Sector – Border Patrol agents arrested two illegal aliens from Mexico and seized a scoped Winchester Model 70 30-06 caliber bolt action rifle, a scoped Winchester Model 770 243 caliber bolt action rifle, and various communications equipment near Arivaca, Arizona. Agents observed the two on a nearby hill and the subjects were subsequently arrested.

    Marfa Sector – Border Patrol agents arrested an illegal alien from Mexico, 11 other illegal aliens and seized a 1999 Chrysler Minivan near Bushland, Texas. Agents performed a vehicle stop on the van and found the illegal aliens inside the vehicle.

    Rio Grande Valley Sector – Border Patrol agents seized 1,403 pounds of marijuana valued at $1,122,400 and recovered a stolen 2006 Ford F-250 truck near La Rosita, Texas. Agents observed unidentified subjects loading suspected narcotics into the vehicle near the Rio Grande River. The vehicle left the river at a high rate of speed and after a brief search, agents found the vehicle abandoned. The driver was not found, but the marijuana was found inside the vehicle.

    Rio Grande Valley Sector – Border Patrol agents seized 1,289 pounds of marijuana valued at $1,031,520, a Ford Explorer, and arrested an illegal alien from Mexico near San Juan, Texas. Agents observed the vehicle leaving the border area, when the driver lost control of the vehicle and it rolled over. The marijuana was found inside the vehicle. Emergency medical services responded but the subject declined medical attention.

    Tucson Sector – Border Patrol agents arrested an illegal alien from Mexico near San Miguel, Arizona. During processing, the subject admitted to being a member of the Sureno gang, and records checks revealed that he was an aggravated felon convicted of armed robbery.
