U.S. Border Patrol Weekly Blotter: (10/27/2010)

Border Patrol agents seized over 13,202 pounds of marijuana and 48.2 pounds of heroin. Agents arrested three criminal aliens and three gang members. There were nine rocking incidents.

El Centro Sector – Border Patrol agents arrested an illegal alien from Mexico near Calexico, California. Records checks revealed the subject had prior convictions for participating in a criminal street gang and various sexual offenses. The subject had also previously been removed from the United States.


El Centro Sector – Border Patrol agents seized 1,002 pounds of marijuana and a Jeep SUV near Calexico, California. The vehicle was found abandoned and the marijuana was discovered in numerous bundles inside.


Rio Grande Valley Sector – Border Patrol agents arrested an illegal alien from El Salvador near Riviera, Texas. During processing, the subject was identified as a member of the Mara Salvatrucha 13 (MS-13) gang. Records checks revealed the subject had previously been removed from the United States.


San Diego Sector – Border Patrol agents rescued a woman from a vehicle that was submerged upside down in a lagoon near Carlsbad, California. Agents pried the door open and observed a woman in the vehicle with limited air space between the water and floorboard. Agents extracted the woman and provided first aid until local emergency medical services arrived on scene.

Rio Grande Valley Sector – Border Patrol agents seized 3,378 pounds of marijuana, a tractor-trailer, and arrested a United States Citizen (USC) at the traffic checkpoint near Falfurrias, Texas. The subject presented himself for inspection and a Border Patrol canine alerted to the vehicle. A scan using non-intrusive inspection technology revealed anomalies within the vehicle and a subsequent search revealed the marijuana hidden inside.


Rio Grande Valley Sector – A marked Border Patrol vehicle was struck by a stolen vehicle driven by an unidentified subject near Havana, Texas. The driver of the stolen vehicle intentionally struck the Border Patrol unit, damaging its driver's side mirror. The subject then drove the stolen vehicle to the banks of the Rio Grande River and fled on foot. Agents subsequently discovered 689 pounds of marijuana in the vehicle.


Rio Grande Valley Sector – Border Patrol agents seized 638 pounds of marijuana and a Ford truck near La Joya, Texas. Agents observed the truck being loaded with suspected narcotics and relayed the information to other agents and local law enforcement agencies. Local law enforcement officers pursued the vehicle. During the pursuit, subjects in the suspect vehicle began throwing homemade spike strips out of the vehicle, in an attempt to disable pursuing law enforcement vehicles. The suspect vehicle containing the marijuana was abandoned at the Rio Grande River and all of the occupants absconded into Mexico.

Miami Sector – Border Patrol agents arrested an illegal alien from Colombia near Tamarac, Florida. Records checks revealed the subject had prior convictions for multiple felonies, to include sex offense against a child / fondling / lewd and lascivious behavior; cocaine possession and fleeing/eluding law enforcement. The subject had also previously been removed from the United States.


Rio Grande Valley Sector – Border Patrol agents detained a USC at the traffic checkpoint near Falfurrias, Texas. The individual was identified as the subject of an active warrant of arrest for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.


Tucson Sector – Border Patrol agents seized 1,577 pounds of marijuana and a GMC Yukon near Lukeville, Arizona. The vehicle containing the marijuana was found abandoned in the desert.


Tucson Sector – Border Patrol agents arrested an illegal alien from Mexico near Tombstone, Arizona. During processing, the subject admitted to being a member of the Sureño 13 gang. Records checks revealed the subject had previously been removed from the United States.

Laredo Sector – Border Patrol agents arrested an illegal alien from Mexico near Hebbronville, Texas. The subject was found alone in the brush and appeared to be disoriented and dehydrated. The subject stated she believed she had been sexually assaulted by a member of her group after she lost consciousness. The subject was transported by emergency medical services to a local hospital for treatment, and the case was referred to the appropriate agency for investigation.


Rio Grande Valley Sector – Border Patrol agents seized 2,462 pounds of marijuana, a tractor-trailer, and arrested two USCs at the traffic checkpoint near Falfurrias, Texas. The subjects presented themselves for inspection and a scan using non-intrusive inspection technology revealed anomalies within the vehicle. A subsequent search uncovered the marijuana.


Yuma Sector – Border Patrol agents seized 22.4 pounds of black tar heroin and arrested a national of Mexico at the traffic checkpoint on Interstate 8 near Wellton, Arizona. A Border Patrol canine alerted to the vehicle, and a subsequent search revealed the heroin.

El Centro Sector – Border Patrol agents seized 377 pounds of marijuana, a Ford Expedition, and arrested a USC near Calexico, California. Agents observed a vehicle leaving an area where several individuals carrying large backpacks had been observed. Agents attempted a vehicle stop and the driver failed to yield. A CBP Office of Air and Marine air asset surveilled the vehicle until the driver lost control and crashed. The driver was airlifted by emergency medical services to a local hospital, where he was treated then released to Federal agents. The marijuana was discovered inside the vehicle.


Marfa Sector – Border Patrol agents seized .145 pounds of marijuana, a .380 caliber semi-automatic pistol, and arrested a USC at the traffic checkpoint near Sierra Blanca, Texas. The subject presented himself for inspection and a Border Patrol canine alerted to the vehicle. A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed the marijuana and the pistol. Records checks revealed the subject had a prior felony conviction for forgery.


Rio Grande Valley Sector – Border Patrol agents seized 1,825 pounds of marijuana and a Ford van near La Casita, Texas. Agents attempted to conduct a vehicle stop at which time the driver abandoned the vehicle and absconded on foot. A search of the van revealed the marijuana inside. A law enforcement task force subsequently discovered additional bundles of marijuana inside a residence near the scene.


Tucson Sector – Border Patrol agents arrested seven illegal aliens near Nogales, Arizona. The seven subjects claimed to have been robbed and stripped of their clothing by a bandit armed with an assault rifle. One female subject stated she had been raped by the bandit, and four other subjects claimed they were inappropriately touched and violated. The alleged rape victim was transported to a local hospital where she was treated and released into Border Patrol custody. The case was referred to the appropriate agencies for further investigation.

El Paso Sector – Border Patrol agents seized 92 pounds of marijuana and arrested a USC near Animas, New Mexico. Records checks revealed the subject had prior convictions for aggravated sexual assault on child, and assault causing bodily injury to a family member. The subject was also registered as a sex offender in the state of Texas. DEA assumed custody of the case. A 72 hour lane check was negative.


Rio Grande Valley Sector – A Border Patrol agent was assaulted by an illegal alien from Mexico near Brownsville, Texas. The subject actively resisted and assaulted the agent during the arrest. The agent was able to subdue the subject and take him into custody. Records checks revealed the subject had previously been removed from the United States.


Tucson Sector – Border Patrol agents were assaulted by unidentified subjects near Nogales, Arizona. Agents were arresting an illegal alien near the international border fence when they were attacked by subjects throwing rocks from Mexico. Agents deployed their pepperball launching system, and the assailants broke off their attack and retreated further into Mexico. Agents took the illegal alien into custody without further incident.

El Centro Sector – Border Patrol agents seized 25.8 pounds of heroin, a 1995 Ford Explorer, and arrested a USC at the traffic checkpoint near Calexico, California. A Border Patrol canine alerted to the vehicle, and a subsequent search by agents revealed the heroin hidden inside.


Tucson Sector – Border Patrol agents seized 1,162 pounds of marijuana on the Tohono O'Odham Nation near Topowa, Arizona. Agents received information regarding suspected narcotics and responded to the area to investigate. A Border Patrol canine led investigating agents to 19 burlap sacks containing the marijuana which had been abandoned.
