Man gets 10 years for role in death of illegal immigrants

A man was sentenced to 10 years in prison Thursday for his part in the deaths of two illegal entrants who died while he was smuggling them into the United States.

Alberto Antonio Sanchez, 23, of Toluca, Mexico, pleaded guilty on Feb. 15 to transportation of illegal entrants for commercial or private financial gain resulting in death, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Sanchez was driving a stolen Dodge Durango in a rural part of Southern Arizona when he picked up 11 illegal entrants who were from Mexico and Brazil. Sanchez was speeding in the sport utility vehicle, lost control and rolled it several times. Two passengers were killed the other nine were injured, according to a U.S. Attorney's Office news release. Sanchez ran away, but was arrested a short time later.
