Canadian Man Shot At U.S. Border: Officials

DETROIT - The U.S. border agency says a Canadian man was shot after allegedly pointing a handgun at guards at the Ambassador Bridge crossing between Windsor, Ont., and Detroit.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection says in a statement the man stopped his car before the U.S. inspection booth around 3 a.m. Sunday and starting walking towards border officers while waving a gun.

It says the officers ordered him to drop the weapon but that he then pointed it in the officers' direction, prompting them to open fire.

The agency says the man, who it hasn't been identified, was treated and released from hospital before being taken into custody.

It says the man has had "previous encounters" with Canadian law enforcement.

The statement says border and Department of Homeland Security officials are investigating along with Detroit police.

Spokesman Kris Grogan says no additional information will be released at this time.

Windsor police say the man was seen waving a handgun in the parking lot of a local McDonald's some 20 minutes before the incident at the border crossing.

They say that when police arrived he was ordered to drop the weapon but refused, and then pointed the gun at officers, who were not aware of what was happening as they were busy dealing with passersby behind the man.

According to the police statement, the man then told officers "Why haven't you shot me yet?" and that officers tried to talk him down.

Police say the man then got back into his SUV and drove off before officers could get back to their cruisers.

Canadian shot by U.S. border agent at Ambassador Bridge charged

'Just shoot me. I want to die. It's a fake gun,' man yelled, according to U.S. border agents

CBC News Posted: Dec 29, 2014 3:43 PM ET Last Updated: Dec 29, 2014 4:14 PM ET

A Canadian man shot by a U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent at the Ambassador Bridge in Detroit has been charged by U.S. law enforcement.

The 22-year-old Windsor, Ont., man has been charged with using a dangerous weapon to forcibly assault, resist, oppose, impede, intimidate and/or interfere with a U.S. federal law enforcement officer performing official duties.

The incident happened at 3 a.m. on Dec. 21.

U.S. border guards at the Ambassador Bridge crossing between Windsor, Ont., and Detroit say the man stopped his car before the U.S. inspection booth and started walking towards border officers while "waving a handgun."

The officers ordered him to drop the weapon, the agency said, but the man instead pointed the gun in the officers' direction, prompting them to open fire.

The man was struck in the arm and fell to the ground.

In an affidavit filed in U.S. District Court, U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents say the man could be heard yelling, "just shoot me. I want to die. It's a fake gun."

The man was carrying a BB gun spray painted to look like a handgun, border agents said in the affidavit.

Incident started in Canada, police say

Minutes before the incident at the bridge, the man initially tried to engage Windsor police while waving a gun in a McDonald's parking lot, Windsor Deputy Police Chief Vince Power said last week.

Police responded to a call about a man with a gun in the restaurant’s parking lot at 2:40 a.m. on Dec. 21. It was the man with the gun who called 911, Power said.

Police said the man pointed the gun in the direction of the officers and asked, "Why haven't you shot me yet?"

When police didn’t open fire, the man drove off in a black Ford Explorer, driving over a sidewalk and eventually onto the E.C. Row Expressway.

Windsor police notified neighbouring police departments, the Canada Border Services Agency and U.S. Customs and Border Protection about the man with a gun, Power said.

Should the man return to Canada, he will face weapons and dangerous driving charges on his return to Canada for events that occurred in Windsor prior to the shooting.
