TIJUANA – An anonymous phone call led authorities Tuesday morning to two tunnels in the border neighborhood of Mesa de Otay, northeast of the city.

State and municipal police agents discovered the underground corridors separated by about 300 feet between Salvatierra and José Gálvez streets, both adjacent to the rusted wall that divides de United States and Mexico, according to the state preventive police.

The deputy director of the state police, Carlos Gómez, said one of the tunnels was about 57 feet deep and between 80 and 96 in length. The tunnel had been discovered and sealed two years ago and apparently was in the process of being reopened, he said.

The other tunnel, about 10 feet deep, was under construction and did not have an end point.

Organized crime groups typically build the tunnels to smuggle drugs and immigrants.

State police turned the tunnels found Tuesday over to federal authorities, who will conduct the investigation. The state also notified U.S. authorities. No arrests were made.
