Arpaio: Immigration Policies Working

The number of illegal immigrants detained in the United States has jumped in the past year, and Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio is claiming part of the credit.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials say 30,000 illegal immigrants have been detained this year, compared with just under 20,000 last year.

Arpaio said 25 percent of them were in his county.

``One-quarter of the whole country, 6,000 in the jail that we have investigated and held, because they're illegals," Arpaio said Monday.

ICE said the national increase was primarily because the federal government detained the immigrants, then released them, instead of catching them.

That didn't surprise Arpaio, who said, ``I've been saying on national t-v constantly that the way to solve the problem is when they cross the border, you lock them up. You don't push them back over again."

He said he's doing his part.

``We're locking up people under state law, and we're the only ones doing that, and we're locking up illegals under federal hats," he said. ``So we're making some enemies out there, but that doesn't bother me. It's not going to deter me. We're going to keep locking them up."
