Border Patrol agent saves migrant from drowning in canal

El Paso, TX - A Border Patrol agent saved an illegal immigrant from drowning in the American Canal Wednesday.

The 38-year-old Mexican national jumped into the canal while attempting to cross illegally into the United States east of the Bridge of the Americas port of entry.

According to CBP officials, the migrant was pulled out of the water unharmed at about 10:30 p.m. The agent observed as the man making the illegal entry begin to have difficulty swimming across the river. He immediately tossed a rescue rope and pulled him out before the strong currents swept him away.

CBP officials also stated the man refused medical treatment and was subsequently taken into custody.

According to the agency, through the end of June, 2007, Border Patrol agents have made 78 rescues of migrants in the El Paso Sector from canals, deserts
