PEEKSKILL — A Tarrytown man is being held today on a federal immigration detainer warrant after he struck several cars with his car while driving drunk, then tried to run from the scene, police said.

The incident took place about 10:15 p.m. Sunday when Diego Tamay, 22, was driving near 500 N. Division St. and struck several parked vehicles before driving off, police said.

Officer John Koselar was responding to the first report when he saw Tamay driving recklessly at Highland and Orchard streets. Police said Tamay rounded a corner, jumped a curb and struck several more parked cars. Tamay then tried to run away but was captured by Koselar, who had to hit Tamay with pepper spray after he charged at the officer, police said.

Tamay was charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, obstructing governmental administration, misdemeanors, and leaving the scene of a property-damage accident, a violation, police said.

He was arraigned in City Court and sent to the Westchester County jail in Valhalla in lieu of $7,500 bail. However, the federal immigration warrant was placed on him after jail officials suspected he was in the country illegally. The warrant ensures he will be held even if he were to post bond.

He is due back in City Court on June 6.
