Politico: Trump's Border Crisis Diverted Millions From Health Programs
Wednesday, July 18, 2018 09:33 AM
By: Brian Freeman
Frenzied efforts to adhere to court orders and reunite families separated by President Donald Trump's border policy has added considerable costs, Politico reported on Wednesday.
Advocates are upset that so far the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has spent tens of millions of dollars in additional costs due to the separation policy instead of being used for other priorities such as medical research and rural health programs.
In the past two months the department has spent at least $40 million for the care and reunification of migrant children separated from their families at the border, and officials are preparing to shift an additional $200 million from other department accounts.
This taking of funds from within the department comes even as the White House considers a request for additional funding for the Department of Homeland Security, which would almost certainly enrage fiscal hawks as midterm elections approach.
"We have a public health emergency like Ebola, Zika, hurricanes — except this one is man-made," Coalition for Health Funding executive director Emily Holubowich told Politico, adding that HHS should request emergency funding too. "We should not be taking discretionary funding away from programs that need it."
Some Republican have joined Democrats in demanding that the department detail its efforts to reunite families as frustration has grown over the slow pace of the process.
Simply housing more than 2,500 children separated by the Trump administration has cost more than $30 million in the past two months, largely because HHS has been forced to use "influx shelters." These temporarily contracted facilities cost more than three times a standard shelter.
HHS has also spent $10 million to hire an additional 100 case managers and about 50 support staff to help handle children's cases for the next two months, and the use of the department’s emergency response team has added hundreds of thousands of dollars in spending. Additional steps need to reunite the families will increase the cost even more.
In the long run, there is also concern that Trump’s separation of thousands of children may have created significant, costly health care problems that will linger for years.

All over children who should have been taken immediately to the nearest Consulate and removed by the Consulate at its expense to the care and custody of their home countries. It's just grand stupidity going on.
