A man who had been deported has been indicted in federal court on allegations that he returned to the country while illegally smuggling in others, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Dallas announced Wednesday.
Ignacio Garcia, 32, was charged in the Northern District of Texas federal court with one count of conspiracy to transport illegal aliens, one count of transporting illegal aliens and one count of illegally reentering the country after deportation.
Federal prosecutors allege Garcia drove into the country on June 11 with the other immigrants in tow. He was arrested that day. Garcia was allegedly paid for his troubles.
Garcia was previously convicted in November 2010 of illegally transporting immigrants into the country. He was sentenced to 13 months in prison and then deported.
The conspiracy and transportation charges each carry a sentence of up to 10 years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine. Garcia could also face up to 20 years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine for coming back to the U.S. after he was deported.
