Joe says Napolitano will not stop his imm. enforcement

Arpaio calls out Napolitano for crackdown on felons
    May 13th, 2008 @ 8:28pm
    by Bob McClay/KTAR Newsroom

Gov. Janet Napolitano is devoting $1.6 million to clean up 60,000 outstanding felony warrants in the state - an order that seems to have upset Maricopa County Sherriff Joe Arpaio.

Arpaio said Napolitano's order diverts money from Maricopa County, which he uses to crack down on illegal immigrants.

"I still have a gun and badge, I'm still the sheriff and I'm going to make the policy how my policy is," Arpaio said. "And, Mesa - you're next."

Arpaio, who met with Napolitano for lunch last week, claimed she is part of a conspiracy to stop him from enforcing immigration laws. Arpaio accused the governor of joining Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon and Maricopa County Supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox in a conspiracy against him.

"I got news for the governor, I've got news for the mayor, I've got news for Mary Rose Wilcox - money or no money, I guarantee you, we will fight this illegal immigration problem and Mesa, Arizona is our next stop," Arpaio said.

Under the governor's directive, the Arizona Department of Public Safety would oversee a multi-agency task force to hunt down felons.

"Our office has been asked to and will look into the legality of the governor's actions," Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas said. "There were agreements signed and agreements now are not being honored so we will be looking into that issue .

Napolitano, Arpaio at odds over felony warrants

    Dennis Welch, Tribune
Gov. Janet Napolitano has issued an executive order aimed at cleaning up nearly 60,000 outstanding felony warrants. But the order, issued Monday, has angered Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio who says it will damage his efforts to fight illegal immigration.

Under the directive, the Arizona Department of Public Safety would oversee a multi-agency task force to hunt down felons.

It also would divert$1.6 million from the sheriff's office to DPS, money Arpaio has said he uses to crack down on those suspected of being in the country illegally.

In a letter, Roger Vanderpool, director of DPS, asked the sheriff to join the newly created task force. About 42,000 outstanding warrants are in Maricopa County and Arpaio has been criticized recently for going after illegal immigrants and letting the warrants remain unserved.

Arpaio hastily scheduled a press conference set for this afternoon in Phoenix to criticize the governor’s plan. He will be joined by House Speaker Jim Weiers, R-Phoenix, Rep. Russell Pearce, R-Mesa and County Attorney Andrew Thomas, according to a press release sent out about an hour before the conference was to begin.

Ahhhhhhhhh, this should be good. Joe will certainly clear up the progressive liberal fog swirling through Gov. Napolitano's empty suit head.

There are currently 41, 903 outstanding warrants in Maricopa County right now.

Well, let's see: As of November 2006, there were approximately 70,000 outstanding warrants in Marciopa County.

    Source: phoenix.about.com/b/2006/11/16/is-there-a-warrant-issued-for-your-arrest.htm - 24k -

According to my calculations this shows that, in the past 18 months, a total of 28,097 warrants have been cleared. Who cleared the majority of them? Not to disparage any other police force active within the county but I don't recall anyone but the MCSO routinely carrying out sweeps intended to pick up those wanted on warrants.

This is what the governor calls "piling up"? By my definition, piling up would be the steady increase back toward, or even exceeding, the 70,000 number of 18 months ago. This has not happened.

Napolitano has once again done a huge disservice to the lawful population of this state for her own political gain and should be ashamed of herself. The sad thing is that she won't be. She's too busy building political allies and donors for when she decides to run for higher office.
