Phoenix Police Chief says 'NO' to immigration law

PHOENIX -- The head of the Phoenix Police Department has taken a stand against illegal immigration law.

"I share in the frustration of the vast majority of people from the Valley and state and across the country that are concerned about the immigration issue," said Public Safety Manager Jack Harris.

Phoenix Police say they feel the impact of illegal immigration.

"We have seen an increase in border-related violence like home invasion, and kidnapping over the past few years," Harris said Friday.

But Harris said Senate Bill 1070, now law, isn't the way to fix the problem.

"The Phoenix Police Department is in opposition to the law as it is written," Harris said.

He says immigration should be fixed on a federal level not locally.

Regardless of his stand, the law is the law.

"And if a new law is passed it is our job to enforce that law, we will do everything humanly possible to enforce the law," Harris said.

Hearing Harris's position, Governor Jan Brewer was quick to react.

"It's unfortunate, I guess it's his right to presume he opposes it, but I support it," Brewer responded.

The new law will take affect on July 29.

"I think the people of Arizona support it, and I believe the majority throughout the country support it," Brewer said.
