Tosa to consider referendum on proof of citizenship voting requirement

Wauwatosa — Voters might get a chance to state their opinion on whether Wisconsin should require proof of citizenship to vote.

The matter will be taken up Tuesday by the Common Council.

Ald. Jacqueline Jay is proposing that a city ballot, sometime in 2010, contain an advisory referendum. According to the council agenda, the referendum would urge the state "to require persons wishing to vote to show proof of citizenship by official state identification."

The proposed referendum was recommended on a 4-1 vote by a council committee.

Jay said Monday that many residents told her after the November general election that they feared their votes were being diluted by possible voter fraud. She said a proof of citizenship requirement statewide "would give people a sense of confidence that their vote really maters and we won't be having people vote illegally."
