Guadalupe could trade MCSO for Tempe

Tempe could be the next in line to offer Guadalupe a helping hand with its public safety woes.

Guadalupe Mayor Rebecca Jimenez recently wrote a letter to Tempe Mayor Hugh Hallman asking that the neighboring city leaders meet to "explore how law-enforcement services are provided" in Guadalupe, according to a June 17 Tempe memo.

After Jimenez had a blowout with Sheriff Joe Arpaio over an April crime sweep in the town just south of Tempe, Guadalupe has been looking for an alternative to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office for public safety services.

Jimenez called Arpaio's sweeps an excuse to target Hispanics and undocumented immigrants. Arpaio said he was protecting the public when he flooded the primarily Native American and Hispanic town of about 5,000 with a crime suppression unit.

The sweeps erupted in a backlash of protests and deteriorated into a public spat between Jimenez and Arpaio.

Both officials said they wanted to end the contract Guadalupe had with MCSO. Arpaio gave the town six months to find a new law enforcement agency.

Tempe City Manager Charlie Meyer said Hallman responded to Jimenez, saying he would refer her request for a meeting to Meyer.

Meyer said he has contacted Guadalupe's interim town manager and is waiting for Guadalupe city officials to schedule that meeting.

Meyer had no timeline on when a meeting would occur. But the deadline for Guadalupe to find new law enforcement services to protect its small community is nearing.

Tempe has a longstanding relationship with Guadalupe and Meyer said the city sees the potential discussions as an extension of that relationship.

"We engage in these things with our neighbors," he said.

Tempe, he said, already provides Guadalupe with water services and back up fire services.

Meyer said he would invite Tempe Police Chief Tom Ryff to discussions about "policing services" if Guadalupe requested his presence.

How many different ways are there to provide Police services ??? Oh
yea , i forgot , They have to leave those precious illegals alone .
