    By Gary R. Martin - Express-News WASHINGTON — Frustrated with the lack of federal funds to combat escalating violence and drug trafficking along the Rio Grande, Texas border sheriffs are asking the state’s congressional delegation to secure money to hire more deputies.

    Maverick County Sheriff Tomas Herrera said Wednesday that manpower to fight drug trafficking is a financial burden to be shouldered by the federal government, not just local taxpayers.

    We need fully equipped National Guard on the border with the power and authority to stop and detain any and all unauthorized people/vehicles from entering our country.

    Police are not trained to repel military style cartels.
