BROWNSVILLE — Customs officers in Eagle Pass seized heroin valued at more than $2.5 million from the trunk of a sports car, Customs and Border Protection said Wednesday.

The seizure occurred Monday at Bridge I of the Eagle Pass Port of Entry after a scanner showed odd shapes in the cargo area of a 1998 Toyota Supra and a drug-sniffing dog alerted to the odor of narcotics. Officers found 36 packages of heroin with a total weight of 25.5 pounds.

The driver, a 33-year-old Mexican man who lives in north Chicago, was turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement for further investigation. CBP Port Director Cynthia Rodriguez said it was the port's largest seizure of heroin so far this fiscal year.
