PHOENIX - A nationwide immigration enforcement operation has led to the arrests of more than 2,900 fugitives, including 56 here in Arizona.
According to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesperson, the seven-day "Cross Check" operation involved the collaboration of more than 1,900 ICE officers and agents from 24 of the agency's field offices.
"Because of the hard work and focus of ICE officers and agents in Arizona tracking down at large criminal aliens and fugitives, there are 56 fewer criminal aliens in our neighborhoods across the state," said Katrina S. Kane, field office director of ICE's Enforcement and Removal Operations in Arizona.
The majority of arrests in Arizona reportedly occurred in the Phoenix area, where 46 people were taken into custody. The remaining fugitives were arrested in Tucson, Sierra Vista and Rio Rico.
According to ICE, 38 of the suspects had prior criminal convictions for serious felonies, including aggravated assault, child abuse and drug trafficking. Officers also arrested two documented gang members and three immigration fugitives.
