PHOENIX - The two proposed referendum drives challenging Arizona's new sweeping law targeting illegal immigration are being scuttled by their organizers.

A professional petition circulator ramrodding one effort says its backers pulled the plug after they concluded they had no certainty that they could time their petition filings in a way to put the law on hold pending a public vote in 2012, not November of this year.

The chief organizer of the other drive attributes its end to a legal conclusion that the law would have been subject to legal protections under Arizona's Constitution if approved by Arizona voters.

The law still is the subject of several legal challenges.
