SAN DIEGO — What’s in a last name?

Quite a bit if you’re one of those Republican critics of Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who, in 2001, signed a common-sense bill that allows illegal immigrants who attend state colleges and universities in the Lone Star State, and who are in the process of getting citizenship, to pay in-state tuition.

Here’s what Perry said at the CNN/tea party debate: “In the state of Texas, if you’ve been in the state of Texas for three years, if you’re working towards your college degree, and if you are working and pursuing citizenship in the state of Texas, you pay in-state tuition there. And the bottom line is it doesn’t make any difference what the sound of your last name is. That is the American way.â€
