Napolitano sees progress in state-Mexican border security efforts
The Business Journal of Phoenix - 4:04 PM MST Fridayby Mike SunnucksThe Business Journal
Gov. Janet Napolitano Friday said state and Mexican officials are making some progress in curtailing illegal drug trafficking, fake IDs and other smuggling along Arizona's border with Mexico.

That includes the seizure of nine tons of marijuana and 80 pounds of cocaine in recent months.

After meetings with Mexican officials in Scottsdale, Napolitano said the state has blocked wire transfers from drug cartels and smuggling rings and seized substantial amounts of drugs.

Arizona is a top entry point into the U.S. from Mexicn for illegal immigrants, as well as for drug cartels and other smugglers.

The efforts, which are in conjunction with the Mexican state of Sonora, also include seizing numerous stolen vehicles. Napolitano hopes to increase cooperation with Sonoran officials.

Border security is a top issue in this year's elections and Napolitano supports a border security plan put forward by President Bush and a guest worker program favored by Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.

Past cooperative efforts between the U.S. and Mexico have been stymied by corrupt police and military units in Mexico and a lack of resources and enforcement on the American side.

The Democratic governor faces an election challenge from Republicans who take a more get-tough approach to the border situation. Napolitano has carved a more moderate approach to the key issue.

The only thing Gov. Mexicano will be carving in November is her Thanksgiving turkey--after her lame frame is sent packing.
Maybe the new Mexican president can give her a post in his administration.
