Nobody had much to say about the Darwin Ramirez verdict. But then, in a case like this, what is there to say?

Charged with predatory criminal sexual assault in an incident last December involving a two-year-old girl, the 18-year-old undocumented immigrant from Honduras pleaded guilty to the Class X felony and was sentenced Tuesday to six years in the Illinois Department of Corrections by Cook County Circuit Court Judge Thomas Fecarotta. The sentence followed a negotiated plea, about which the prosecutor and Ramirez's public defender declined to comment.

A slight man, Ramirez stood with his head bowed while assistant state's attorney Mike Andre repeated the facts of the crime which occurred in December 2007 as the victim's parents listened, their faces grim and their eyes glistening.

Ramirez, a nephew of the victim's father, had been staying with the family in their Hoffman Estates home for about four months when the girl's mother walked into a bedroom and found Ramirez refastening her crying daughter's diaper, explaining that it was full of urine.

As the girl's parents left the courtroom, her mother said that her daughter was doing OK but declined to discuss the situation further, saying only that "justice was done."

A call to the defendant's assistant public defender was not returned.
