WASHINGTON, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- Arizona wants to be the first southern border state to pilot new driver licenses confirming the holder’s citizenship to verify immigration status.

The cards will also allow the holder to enter the country when the Department of Homeland Security introduces tough new ID regulations for U.S. citizens at the border next year.

In a statement Friday, the office of Democratic Gov. Janet Napolitano said the licenses would “provide Arizona employers with a secure document that can be used in validating a person’s legal (immigration) status.â€
