Man Faces Charges in Pa. Turnpike Crash

by KYW’s Brad Segall

A deadly crash that shut down the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike for several hours last Friday is now a criminal investigation.

a Philadelphia man is behind bars in connection with the crash near the Lansdale interchange. Prosecutor Risa Ferman says 44-year-old Hauw Kurniawan was driving with a suspended and expired license when he lost control of his vehicle in the northbound lanes:

“He caused an accident. He actually ran into the Jersey barrier in the middle of the road, which caused other cars to crash as well and during the course of this crash and his car spinning around. His passenger was ejected from the car and killed on the roadway.”

Ferman says the investigation is still ongoing and the Porter Street man may face more charges. She says he’s also in the country illegally and immigration officials are also involved. Kurniawan remains jailed on $50,000 cash bail.
