Cardenas-Galvez
The second of two men arrested in a traffic stop in August that turned up more than a kilo of powder cocaine pleaded guilty Wednesday in Frederick County Circuit Court.
In an agreement reached as he was set to go on trial, Leobardo Cardenas-Galvez pleaded guilty to conspiracy to possess cocaine with the intent to distribute.
Judge Julie Stevenson Solt ordered Cardenas-Galvez, 26, to serve seven years in the Maryland Division of Correction. However, Solt suspended all of that sentence except for time already served in the Frederick County Adult Detention Center -- 192 days.
"Mr. Cardenas-Galvez has an immigration detainer that he now needs to take care of," defense attorney Bryon C. Black said.
Black and Assistant State's Attorney Lindell K. Angel resolved the case with the plea agreement Cardenas-Galvez accepted.
On Dec. 8, Cardenas-Galvez's co-defendant, Jorge Luiz Orozco-Sandoval, was convicted of possession of a large amount of cocaine, according to court records.
Orozco-Sandoval, 21, of Gaithersburg, was ordered to serve five years of a 10-year prison sentence.
Both men were placed on five years of unsupervised probation.
The men, undocumented immigrants from Mexico, are considered "EWIs" because they entered the United States without inspection, the Frederick County Sheriff's Office said at the time of their arrests.
When stopped about 9 p.m. Aug. 11 along the Golden Mile for following too closely, the men were found with drugs and $696 in their 2000 Dodge Neon, deputies said.
The passenger, Orozco-Sandoval, had a one-kilo brick of cocaine in his front waistband and a one-quarter ounce bag of cocaine in his pants pocket, deputies said.
A police dog alerted officers to a one-eighth ounce bag of cocaine under the passenger seat of the car, stopped on U.S. 40 west at Hillcrest Drive.
