HAMILTON — An illegal immigrant charged with murder in the stabbing death of a Middletown man last summer pleaded guilty to a lesser charge Friday afternoon in Butler County Common Pleas Court.

Jesus Alcala-Nava, 23, was scheduled to go to trial Monday in Judge Andrew Nastoff's courtroom, but instead entered a guilty plea to involuntary manslaughter and tampering with evidence in the July 1 death of Mario Anjeles Rios, also 23, of Middletown, according to Assistant Butler County Prosecutor Lee Oldendick.

According to Hamilton police, Rios was approached by a group of men in the 600 block of Ludlow Street in Hamilton shortly after an argument with his girlfriend.

Authorities said Alcala-Nava used a knife to cut Rios on the right forearm, then stabbed him in the back.

Co-defendants Juan Antonio Riverol-Dominguez, 26, and Jesus Linares-Dominguez, 24, both were charged with two counts each of obstructing justice for assisting Alcala-Nava in fleeing the state after the incident. The three fled after the stabbing, but were caught in Chicago on July 13.

According to police, all three men are illegal immigrants from Mexico and were living at an Exeter Avenue home in Hamilton at the time of the killing.

Oldendick said Riverol-Dominguez and Linares-Dominguez both pleaded last week and agreed to testify against Alcala-Nava.

"I think (Alcala-Nava) then thought he should take the plea," Oldendick said.

Alcala-Nava is scheduled to be sentenced March 16. He faces up to 15 years in prison. Oldendick said the prison sentence will be served before the U.S. Department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement considers him for deportation.
